Patches on Boy Scout California uniform
This September we will be pledging the support of our Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Teams and Venture Crews for the California Coastal and Inland Waterway Cleanup. California Coastal Cleanup Day will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 AM until Noon at all beaches and waterways in the great state of California. Scouting units in the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council are encouraged to cleanup any beach of waterway in the tri-county area. California Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup, is the state’s largest volunteer event. State-wide, volunteers remove more than 1.2 million pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways annually. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world. Save the date and schedule your unit’s participation along the beaches of our council.
The purpose of the cleanup is to:
- Beautify the beaches
- Learn about the coastal environment
- And have fun!
If you are new to California Coastal and Inland Waterway Cleanup, please go to the beach of your choice. Volunteers from the various coastal organizations will be at selected beaches with bags and other materials. Scouts should wear their uniform, a unit t-shirt or another form of Scouting apparel while at the cleanup.
And don’t forget to take photos and share them with the council! You post them on your unit social media page using #svmbcbeachcleanup.
